Wild Ingleborough is a landscape-scale restoration programme. Using a combination of conservation techniques and natural regeneration, we are restoring the mixed habitats of Ingleborough’s massif for the benefit of wildlife and local communities, to create a wilder future in the Yorkshire Dales.

Situation
Ingleborough’s unique limestone landscape means it has the potential to support hundreds of rare species. This land was once abundant with patches of woodland, wildflower meadows, and rich biodiversity but centuries of human activity has greatly depleted the wildlife in this landscape. As we face an ecological crisis, it is paramount we create bigger, better-protected areas for nature, giving wildlife the space to increase species populations, and be more resilient to a changing climate.
Solution
In a combined effort with partners and volunteers, we are restoring Ingleborough’s unique habitats at landscape scale, for the benefit of hundreds of species, some of which face extinction. By growing and planting upland trees, we are recreating patches of woodland. By using low intensity conservation grazing, we are managing the upland pastures and creating the conditions for a multitude of wildflowers. By propagating rare plants in our montane nursery, we will replant the limestone pavements.
