Situation
Our work responds to the need to address the pernicious and ingrained ageism, in individuals and across society, which the UN Report on Ageism, March 2021, says “leads to poorer health, social isolation, earlier deaths and cost(s) economies billions”. A lack of opportunities for older people to take part in suitable physical activity means a negative spiral of decline. Yet, we are an ageing population with the number of people aged over 65 years in the UK estimated to rise to 22% by 2032.
Solution
Our Moving Well programme helps sustain physical activity in older people, supports their social connections, and challenges age-related stereotypes. It takes place in accessible spaces such as shopping centres and libraries, and is shaped by the participants themselves. It’s an inclusive approach, led by older women, which inspires flexibility, personal growth and long-term engagement. Participants learn new skills, make friends, grow in confidence and devise their own work for performance.
