Songbirds delight us, nourishing our health and well-being. All while being an essential part of our ecosystem. However, their populations have plummeted by 50% in the last 50 years. Through our research, we can better understand why our songbirds are declining, and what we can do to stop it.

The population of UK songbirds has fallen by a staggering 50% in 50 years. Once common species - such as the Nightingale and Willow Tit - have become rare sights. Some, like the tree sparrow, have had populations decline by up to 96%. We live in an era of mass species extinction, driven by threats such as climate change, predation, and landscape changes. We urgently need a better understanding of why UK songbirds are disappearing before it is too late.

Our charity’s mission is to protect, preserve and restore the population of songbirds (and other small birds) in the UK for the benefit of the public, and for nature in its widest sense. Our independent research programme is delivered by experts at top universities to identify and fill gaps in current knowledge. We share our findings and provide practical expert advice to protect and support birds and wildlife across the UK.
