We are seeking funding to develop a new after-school writing club at Milton’s Cottage. Using Milton’s cast of demons, angels, gods and monsters as inspiration, we will provide opportunities for young people to get creative and express themselves where one of the world’s great poems was written.

Communication skills have never been more important, but English is declining in popularity in UK schools. It has dropped from 1st to 12th most popular A Level, while 2023 research by the National Literacy Trust shows 56% of young people aged 8-18 don’t enjoy reading in their own time. This is an all-time low since the survey began in 2005. Authors, parents & teachers have warned the way English is taught today - focusing on grammar and rote learning - is putting pupils off reading and writing.
At a time when schools are spending less time and money on creative learning, we will provide creative writing opportunities in a fun and informal setting - helping young people rediscover the joy of reading and writing. This will develop their articulacy, creativity, confidence and literacy as well as supporting health and well-being. We will engage young people who will benefit most from this project by working with Bucks and Greater London schools under-performing in literacy and SEN schools.
