The white-clawed crayfish is the UK's only native freshwater crayfish, but their survival is under threat. Thought to have declined by 95% within Hampshire since the 1970s, we must take action to save this species or risk them being lost from our precious chalkstreams forever.

Situation
England is home to around 85% of the world’s chalk streams, many of which are found in Hampshire. Invasive species, pollution and habitat loss threaten these vital waterways, risking the loss of precious biodiversity and the essential services they provide. White-clawed crayfish play a crucial role in the conservation of chalk streams, with their presence indicating a healthy ecosystem. But the crayfish are endangered and they need our help if they are going to survive.
Solution
Leveraging Marwell’s expertise in animal husbandry, welfare and endangered species management, we will create a conservation breeding facility for white-clawed crayfish. Providing a safe haven prior to their release into ark sites or existing wild populations, the project will also raise awareness of the species and their precious chalk stream habitats, highlighting the threats and demonstrating how people can take action for their survival.
