We strongly believe in the importance of the arts for people of all ages. However, continuing cuts to arts funding in schools means that this is not always possible for all children. In particular, within our local borough of Lambeth (one of the poorest in London), many young people may feel that contemporary art and a space like Hayward Gallery is not for them. Many teachers, particularly in primary, may not have the resources or confidence to incorporate art into lessons.

Takeover Days involve handing over Hayward Gallery to 200 visiting pupils, from state schools in Lambeth and other deprived areas. Leading the session are 48 pupils who have worked with our team, in advance of the Takeover to devise activities for their peers. Our Teachers' Twilights give Primary, Secondary and SEND teachers free access to hear from our curatorial team, build a deeper understanding of the exhibition and liaise with the team about engaging their pupils in the exhibition.
