In 2020, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) moved into Acland Burghley School (ABS), a non-selective state comprehensive in North London. The OAE works closely with school staff to engage all pupils in all of our activity, to provide arts opportunities that are otherwise unavailable.

ABS has a school population of over 1,150 students; around 45% of pupils are eligible for the pupil premium (higher than the national average), 35% are from global majority communities and 18% have AEN (Additional Educational Needs) or SEN/D (Special Educational Needs and Disability). Through funding cuts to arts education, many students at ABS have little to no exposure to live music making and performance of any kind, or the skills associated with this industry, without the OAE's residency.

Prior to this residency, the OAE’s rehearsals took place behind closed doors. The OAE is now embedded at ABS and the orchestra is at the heart of school life. The OAE rehearse in the school hall and the OAE office and music library are situated within the school. Through being based within ABS, the OAE affords pupils opportunities to gain work experience, access open rehearsals, and engage in cross-curricular activity like 'Breaking Bach' - a collaboration between the orchestra and ABS dancers.
