    Situation

People living with dementia can face real challenges in engagement with their communities and peers resulting in loneliness, isolation, and further decline in their mental wellbeing. There are numerous barriers to participation in group activities including communication challenges, appropriate transportation, unsuitable or overly stimulating spaces, or a lack of bespoke opportunities which meet their specific needs and place them, and those who care for them, at the heart of the activity.

    Solution

Sinfonia Viva develops creative music projects with older people living with dementia and their carers, empowering them to lead the creative content and outcomes. Led by expert professional musicians, music is the primary communication tool in sessions, so all participants can contribute equally, working together to develop their music. This approach provides a sense of achievement, supports non-verbal communication and self-expression, reduces loneliness, and improves mental wellbeing.
