Situation
For far too long there has been a nature-shaped hole in domestic and international criminal law. At present, individuals are not held criminally accountable when it is proven that their decisions have led to devastating environmental damage, such as vast chemical or oil spills or the clear-cutting of primary rainforests.
Solution
International recognition of ecocide under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court would remove an individual’s ability to shelter behind the limited liability of a corporation or the impunity that comes with being part of a ruling government. It will fundamentally reconfigure the global moral and legal order in favour of nature and in turn all of us that rely on it for our prosperity and survival.
