The UK faces a dire nature crisis as 16% of species are at risk of extinction. Additionally, over half of the UK's native flowering plants have dwindled or vanished from their habitats. With an increasing urban population, prioritising urban green spaces becomes crucial. Cities serve as sanctuaries for pollinators, and biodiverse areas enhance human well-being. However, biodiversity faces threats in urban settings, with unequal access to green spaces, especially in deprived neighbourhoods.

The Hackney Buzzline, a 4km ecological pathway linking parks and housing estates, aims to support pollinators using wildflower meadows and 'stepping-stone' habitats. It builds on a decade-long biodiversity plan, securing funding for wildflower meadows and engaging children in planting projects. Over the next three years, it will integrate community and council efforts to boost biodiversity and well-being in Hackney, involving schools and community hubs in 18 planting projects along the route.
