Through our core programmes, we work to rebuild care leavers' and other marginalised young people's self-esteem, and develop the skills and resilience they need to lead independent lives.

Situation
The statistics care leavers face as they move into adulthood are frightening. Only 1% of children in the UK have been in care, and yet 40% of youth offenders and 70% of sex workers have a care background. One third will experience homelessness within two years of leaving care, they are between four and five times more likely to commit suicide and 46% of care leavers are continuously NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training).
Solution
The Big House (TBH) was founded to break the cycle of disadvantage that care leavers find themselves trapped in. We use drama and individualised long-term support to help them address fundamental emotional issues, build self-confidence and develop the life skills needed to move forward with their lives. Our core Open House Project sees young people take part in a run of a full-scale theatre piece, which is inspired by the young people's experiences and brings key social issues into sharp focus.
