We are campaigning for a twentyfold growth in community-owned renewable energy projects, which would save 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually whilst benefiting local people. To achieve this, we are amplifying people’s voices in calling on their MPs to support the Local Electricity Bill becoming law.

Situation
Accelerating our transition to renewable energy is vital to tackling climate change. Community energy projects have huge potential to drive this whilst benefiting local people. But the UK is far behind other countries, with such projects making up only 0.5% of electricity generation. Studies show there is massive potential for growth and that communities everywhere wish to build renewable infrastructure and supply clean energy locally. Outdated energy market rules stand in the way.
Solution
We have drafted legislation – the Local Electricity Bill – that would enable community energy projects, owned and run by local people, to sell their clean electricity locally. We have empowered tens of thousands of people to advocate for this change, which has led to 326 MPs becoming supportive and the Government’s new £10 million Community Energy Fund to help get projects started. But for the Bill to become law, support from more MPs and, ultimately, the Government is needed.
