We’re raising funds for The Empowering Women Foundation (EWF) to produce a film about Safe Motherhood in Sierra Leone, which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally. Safe motherhood initiatives are crucial to reducing these alarming rates and saving the lives of mothers & babies.

Sierra Leone has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world, with 717 mothers dying annually for every 100,000 live births (DHS 2019). One of the primary contributing factors is delayed first visits to health facilities by mothers-to-be, as well as a lack of quality antenatal, intrapartum & postnatal care for mothers. EWF is a grassroots organisation founded by 5 women in Sierra Leone that aims to campaign for gender equality and support women and girls in the local community
Educating mothers and the communities that surround them is a vital part of the solution to reducing high maternal mortality numbers in Sierra Leone. The women of EWF intend to produce a film using professional healthcare workers and personal case studies to inform mothers and their communities about safest practices and deliver a series of community screenings and discussions that will encourage women and their families to access available healthcare services.
