We want to make Leicester Comedy Festival more inclusive for comedians and audiences. We will bring acts from underrepresented groups to the festival, covering their costs. A mixed bill show will feature these acts & take place in non-traditional venue, welcoming new audiences from across the city.

    Situation

We have conducted surveys to the public, as well as the participants to Leicester Comedy Festival, which all reveal a lack of diversity and representation both in the audience and on stage. Local stakeholders (venues and promoters) have told us that demand in these areas is there, and this is something that needs to be addressed urgently. Our festival patron Eshaan Akbar also brought this up to us as a priority for us to support underrepresented minorities in the comedy industry.

    Solution

This will help the local community familiarise themselves to the cultural events we offer, make them feel more included in the festival and city activities, and feel more confident to attend events, first within their local areas, and eventually further out. This will allow individuals most affected by the cost of living crisis to enjoy activities that have positive effects on their wellbeing. It is an opportunity to encourage community cohesion and celebrate diversity in our city.
