At the core of The Turing Trust’s work is our approach to making the most of valuable IT equipment. By saving IT equipment from being wasted and restoring value to it we can provide transformative learning opportunities while saving significant carbon emissions.

We are solving the problems of IT waste in the UK. There are an estimated 2 million tonnes of waste electrical items discarded throughout the UK, much of this is functioning IT equipment. Even before a computer is switched on for the first time, 50% of its lifecycle fossil fuels have already been consumed in manufacturing it. In supplying one classroom we are extending the life of 20 PCs. This gives carbon savings of 6 tonnes of CO2e, which is the equivalent of planting 14 trees.
By collecting redundant IT equipment UK-wide we can restore value to this equipment. We do this through a comprehensive repair and refurbishment process at our Edinburgh workshop. We then provide these revitalised computers to schools to support digital education opportunities. The last year has highlighted the importance of digital access in the UK and reusing laptops in this way solves the issue of IT waste whilst enabling students to learn from home.
