The Somerset Levels were once a vast wild wetland. From pelicans to beavers they teemed with life. Somerset Wildlands is restoring some of that lost wildlife, wildness and wetness through a gentle process of rewilding, creating a mosaic of spaces where nature can take the lead.

Somerset Wildlands is acquiring plots of land and supporting land owners (large and small) to create a mosaic of ‘wild stepping stones’ across the Levels. One of our sites, Athelney (the historic marshes where King Alfred hid from the Vikings), needs limited investment. Previously farmland, the land has been designed for water to run off into ditches and rivers. But with minor adjustments the site will remain wet for longer in Spring and Summer, and create a greater space for wetland wildlife.

Initial investment in water management at the site, which could include repairing a weir or creating shallow ditches and ponds (scrapes), are minor interventions that will significantly boost wetland wildlife, by allowing populations to spread out from the rivers and ditches across more of the 73 acre site.
