Riverwoods aims to grow a network of thriving riverbank woodlands (known as riparian woodlands) and healthy river systems across Scotland. The initiative will tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, with key benefits including flood mitigation, carbon capture and improved water quality.

Scotland’s streams and rivers cover an amazing 125,000kms (12.5 times the length of the country’s coastline). Sadly, a Scottish Environment Protection Agency survey of riverside habitats found that 56% were 'Poor' quality, with little to no tree cover. Riverwoods are facing unprecedented threats from farming, urban development, overgrazing, invasive species and commercial forestry. This erodes their ability to reduce floods, capture carbon, enhance water quality and provide havens for wildlife.

    - Create a network of greener, healthier, waterways and river corridors across Scotland. - Work with local partnerships to plant 100 hectares of exemplar native Riverwoods in 3 distinct river catchments. - Provide grants to enable land managers to create & restore riverwoods. - Inspire people to care for their riverwoods, empower them to influence decisions and train them to get involved. - Develop a digital centre for excellence for best practice guidance, expert knowledge & data sharing.
