Young people are facing an incredibly challenging landscape. The long-term effects of pandemic partnered with the cost-of-living crisis, has led to long- term unemployment amongst 18–24-year-olds rising higher than pre-pandemic levels. One in ten young people not in education, employment, or training (ONS). Without the additional economic challenges, the young people we support in Brighton already face serious barriers getting into work, including a high proportion with mental health challenges.
Since 2018, Spear Brighton has supported 335 young people facing serious barriers getting into work. The Spear programme provides support, practical skills, and the confidence for young people to find employment and/or re-enter education. The initial 6-week Foundation course offers daily group and 1:1 sessions, focusing on Mindset and Attitude as well as more traditional employment skills. Spear Career runs for the rest of the year, supporting each young person as they get into work/education.
