Young people need support to set up a home they can be proud of when they move on from YMCA. Our new resettlement project will mean they have help to get settled and an advocate to help them navigate the tough housing climate and the challenges of living independently, for the next year.

    Situation

Young people’s lives are on hold due to a lack of appropriate places to live, even when they are ready to move on from YMCA. Our supported housing then can’t help others in crisis. The tough housing climate in Leicester means high demand for council housing, unaffordable private deposits and discrimination. Having experienced trauma and without a support network around them it can be isolating for many of our residents to set up home and they are at risk of returning to homelessness.

    Solution

To give young people a fair chance to settle in a safe and happy home of their own after living at YMCA, we will introduce a resettlement coach who can support them for up to a year after moving out to help with challenges such as negotiating, budgeting and lifestyle choices. We will also create a deposit bursary to enable access to private housing, as well as help to source furniture and a gift pack of essentials for every young person that leaves our YMCA to set up a home.
