Southwark Council reports that over 50% of its young people suffer one or more levels of deprivation. The NHS reports that the number of young people aged 12-19 with obesity has more than doubled since 2019. We see links between poverty, deprivation, inactivity, obesity, isolation, depression, and other mental health issues. Nearly all our members have talked about stress, anger, bullying, family and relationship issues. Anti-social behaviour, gang activity and drug-dealing are local problems.

Salmon offers a place where young people can come straight from school, have a hot meal; enjoy indoor sports such as badminton, basketball, trampolining and volleyball; develop their artistic gifts in our arts, dance or music studios; and do homework in our computer suite. The benefits are improved mental and physical health; improved educational achievement and aspirations; and reduced likelihood of engaging in anti-social behaviour. Young people develop a more positive self-image and outlook.
