Debate Mate is responding to the needs identified by UK businesses, education and research reporting on the needs crucial to young people and the UK economy. They highlight a need to overcome the inability of disadvantaged young people to progress and realise their potential, especially in relation to their peers, and the need to tackle a low level of basic skills and to facilitate the acquisition of key life skills. Typically, these pupils have less access to extracurricular activities

Our debate programme, competitions and peer-to-peer mentoring model are proven to teach key 21st-century skills critical and creative thinking, teamwork and leadership while developing confidence, resilience, and empathy. In addition, Debate Mate creates engaged citizens who have an interest in and understanding of the world around them. By engaging in chosen topics, students will go on to be proactive in their engagement around the issues both in the curriculum and their wider communities.
