The Old Vic’s Front Line project helps 16–25 year olds discover more about careers in theatre and develop key transferable skills through paid Front of House placements. Participants watch one of our productions, shadow members of staff and take on important roles welcoming patrons to our theatre.

For many young people there are significant barriers to accessing a career in the arts with unpaid work cited as a key challenge. Entry through volunteering and unpaid internships make it difficult for those who cannot afford to give their time for free to make the connections and gain the vital work experience needed to apply for positions. As a result, there is a lack of representation in the industry with those from privileged backgrounds nearly twice as likely to find work in this sector.

Front Line improves access to the industry by offering up to 24 underprivileged 16-25 years olds the opportunity to shadow several different entry level roles in our Front of House teams during paid shifts. Alongside job shadowing, participants are mentored individually by members of The Old Vic’s Education & Community team and take part in workshops to develop CV writing and interview skills. We also provide transportation costs if needed to further minimise barriers to participation.
