It is estimated that as much as 42% of Kenyan school girls have never used sanitary pads, instead using rags, blankets, pieces of mattress and tissue paper. This reduces their dignity, contributes to infections, and is vulnerable to exploitation. One million school-age girls in Kenya miss an average of four school days per month because of their menstrual cycle and no access to menstrual hygiene products. Girls also lack access to safe spaces at school to change and wash when menstruating.

We will provide reusable dignity packs to menstruating girls in three partner communities, produced by women from our ARISE Centre in Mbita, Kenya, along with vital infrastructure such as safe changing spaces. Education for girls and boys is vital to improve understanding of menstrual & sexual reproductive health, and to reduce the stigma and shame surrounding changes to bodies as children move to adolescence and adulthood. It also requires sensitisation and awareness with parents and teachers.
