    Situation

Music and singing are fun, beneficial ways to bring people of all ages and abilities together. However, people with disabilities often feel isolated and lack confidence to engage in mainstream activities, meaning they miss out. Barriers can also be physical, such as accessibility and support, or emotional such as anxiety and nerves. The opportunity to share and perform, is something that can, and should, benefit everyone who wants to be involved. This is something our project aims to help solve.

    Solution

In September 2021, working with national charity Soundabout, we launched Birmingham Inclusive Choir, for people with disabilities aged up to 25. Since March 2023 the initiative is run solely by SFE, with 32 regular members. We now want to open membership to people of all ages with disabilities, particularly those with severe and profound learning disabilities, reaching more people. The choir will meet once a month, offering a social focus for participants as well as musical.
