CRESS aims to help vulnerable South Sudanese refugees in Northern Uganda have the range of education, knowledge and vocational skills required to enable them to form self-sufficient, sustainable and ethical communities. Our Big Give 2023 will concentrate on supporting education and savings groups.

Most of the refugee community in which CRESS works, lives under the $2 a day mark. Many families just eat one simple innutritious meal a day of maize meaning they are hungry and poor nutrition leaves them vulnerable to illness. In July 2023 food rations for most South Sudanese refugees ceased. The situation was already hard as there is little land available to refugees and many survived through the grain given, either by eating it or exchanging it for other things they needed.

CRESS works with its delivery partner, the Diocese of Liwolo to create Savings Groups and educate refugee children. Savings groups act like a community bank. Refugees put their money in and can then ask for loans for business or family needs. They repay back over time with interest. Groups are also encouraged to create projects to raise funds together. Big Give will enable our yearly savings and education conferences where groups are trained students inspired and ideas are shared.
