A rare English Civil War era warship, the London (lost in 1665) is a Protected Wreck Site on the Thames Estuary. The urgent aim of NAS is to support volunteer divers, under supervision of the Wreck Licensee, to survey the site, record, report, and if appropriate save artefacts for conservation.

    Situation

The urgent need is to create a permanent record of the remains of the vessel for future research and learning which can only be achieved by having eyes on the seabed to monitor, document, and save artefacts. Listed as “At Risk” by Historic England, the wreck was previously protected by thick mud. Dredging of a major Thames shipping lane and the increasing passage of huge vessels now means that the ship is washing away.

    Solution

Under supervision of the Protected Wreck Licensee volunteer divers will conduct archaeological surveys to photograph, record, report and create a permanent record of the remains of The London of 1665. Divers will also recover appropriate samples and artefacts for conservation. The Nautical Archaeology Society will ensure that the results will be available to all for future research and education.
