    Situation

People with Prader-Willi syndrome have an overwhelming and uncontrollable drive to eat which can be life-limiting. Due to a chromosomal abnormality people with PWS constantly feel extremely hungry and will never feel full. Those with PWS also have low muscle tone and they need only two thirds of the calories of others, approximately 800 calories a day. They have behaviours that challenge and so will often steal food, go through rubbish bins and do anything to get the food they crave.

    Solution

We will develop information and resources, with the support of dieticians, which clearly show portion size by age and types of food they should be eating. This information will be provided in plain English and clear visuals for those with PWS so they learn about what they are eating and how it affects them. We will also provide information for parents, carers, hospitals and schools to ensure that those with PWS are eating healthy and in the correct proportions.
