Accidents – such as burns or trauma – and surgery to repair conflict injuries or treat conditions like cancer – cause scarring. In the UK, 20 million people have scars. But the physical and emotional impact is still poorly understood. Scars can cause enormous pain and distress, changing the way we look, feel and live. Inside our bodies, scarring in vital organs like the lungs and heart can be deadly.
