In low and middle income countries 80% of people have little to no access to diagnostic tests. Recognising the vital role of diagnostics to achieve health for all the World Health Assembly, the decision making body of the World Health Organisation, recently adopted a resolution to tackle this. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is one of 10 recommended tests to improve access to diagnostics at the community level. This needs not only more equipment, but much more training of healthcare workers.

Building on our experience of delivering POCUS training for doctors treating adult patients in Ghana, we are expanding our programme to those who look after children. In Ghana 35% of the population is younger than 15 and in many cases Ultrasound will be the safest and most affordable imaging test for them. In 2024, we plan to pilot a new POCUS module for child health practitioners with basic Ultrasound skills and will focus on building trainer capacity.
