Finding sanctuary through Art and Music. Free, high quality classes for refugees and asylum seekers in Greenwich and Lewisham, London. Anna from Ukraine says: “The art class is like meditation. For two hours I must focus on what I’m making with my hands. I can’t think about the news at home."

Greenwich and Lewisham have a high number of refugees and asylum seekers. This programme offers people of all ages who have fled war and persecution free places at the Blackheath Conservatoire, where they can experience high quality teaching in art, music and drama. Many do not have a circle of friends in the area when they arrive, and they may not speak much English. They often have time on their hands, and a desire for therapeutic activities to help them find peace of mind.
Broadening access to arts tuition and the associated therapeutic value this provides, is core to our mission. Our programme, which started in September 2022, has seen over 103 refugees and asylum seekers access free, weekly classes in art music & drama, with some language support. We need funding to continue the programme through 2024. 'Absolutely amazing guitar lessons' Yosef from Ethiopia “This painting class has helped me a lot in this difficult stage of my life.' Maryam from Iran.
