    Situation

The plight of the most marginalised people in the world’s poorest country where cycles of violence and conflict have led to poverty and a mental-health crisis. Thousands of women and young people in Burundi live in poverty, with no economic or food security. They endure severe mental health issues including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The situation is exacerbated by these invisible wounds and underlying tensions within communities which easily lead to violent conflict

    Solution

Building on 18 years of experience in Burundi we will combine expert psychological and social support, with initiatives to achieve economic security. We will provide safe spaces for individuals and communities to process the pain of the past. We will use the tried and tested Self Help Group approach to empower women and young people to establish joint saving funds, from which they can access loans for income generation or community development.
