Our mission at DMU is to empower our students to create a fairer society, alongside a commitment to widening participation and supporting students who are often the first person in their family to access higher education. We are committed to providing a first-class educational experience for all.

    Situation

Healthcare students have typically been hardest hit by the rising costs of living and education, due to lacking time to do holiday or part-time work to mitigate these rising costs. Audiology students particularly are worst hit, as they are not eligible for the NHS Learning Support Fund. However, they are still expected to do placements as part of their course: often unpaid within NHS trusts. We want to provide support to those most affected by this financial hardship.

    Solution

We would provide a stipend to support select Audiology students with travel, accommodation and essential sustenance during their unpaid thirty-week placements. These placements are mandatory for their qualification. Each student will have separate needs, so we would adjust the support based on requirements, but would offer between £500-£2,000 per student. By providing this support our students are able to prioritise their education without the financial worry.
