MAD-Aid is renovating two wards at the Mother and Child Institute - the main children's hospital in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. These wards haven't seen any investment since 1986 and have tiles falling off the walls, dangerous electrical wiring, and a ventilation system which doesn't work.

Situation
These two wards are the only newborn facilities in Moldova where babies with birth defects can have surgical procedures and rehabilitation. More than 25,000 babies have been treated there during the past 35 years. In 2022, the unit saw a huge increase in surgical procedures due to Ukrainian refugee mothers. Overall, health, safety and hygiene conditions are poor. Despite this, the unit has seen an 8% decrease in the mortality rate since 2015, which proves it's successful and deserves investment.
Solution
MAD-Aid will make a long-lasting positive impact on the lives of newborn children in Moldova by refurbishing these two wards to modern standards. By carefully planning and executing the refurbishment process, and prioritising patient safety and comfort throughout, the MAD-Aid team will create a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the needs of the community for many years to come. Since 2012, MAD-Aid has delivered vital medical aid to 39 hospitals in Moldova, 3 in Ukraine and 2 in Romania.
