    Situation

“My recovery has moved on positively. I am more sociable and feel confident.” Citz Member, 2023 Making and viewing art transforms lives. Yet, while 80% of our Members are pursuing careers in theatre or other industries, 71% experience barriers. Less than 8% of UK cultural sector workers are from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds (ONS, 2022) while the cost-of-living crisis is excluding people at the sharpest end of poverty from cultural activities (Audience Agency, 2023).

    Solution

Cardboard Citizens delivers creative workshops, training and performances by and for people with lived experience of homelessness, poverty and inequity. With a renewed focus on learning and creative skills development, our programmes support people to grow in confidence, improve wellbeing and increase employment and life skills. One year on, 60% of our Members feel more confident in their creative abilities and 79% would like to attend more of our programmes to realise their creative potential.
