Following the successful rollout of our contextualised phonics training in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, we are working on greater implementation across the Province and creating sustainability in both training and resources. We will also be introducing pilots in Central Province in early 2024.

Zambia has been grappling with low literacy levels in primary schools and many interventions have been made to arrest the falling literacy levels with minimal improvements. Children in Zambia are taught English literacy in Grade 3. There is a lack of access to relevant education resources and therefore gaps in Primary Teachers’ knowledge regarding literacy in English. This has a huge impact on children's ability to learn to read and write in English which in turn impacts their future education.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Jolly Futures we will further improve implementation of our contextualised Jolly Phonics Teaching Aid & ensure sustainability of the training on the Copperbelt. We are developing additional resources to support school-based CPD, creating a framework to develop improved practice. We are engaging Teacher Training Colleges, so that pre-service teachers are also equipped to teach Jolly Phonics. We will also introduce pilots in Central Province.
