Kolkata in India has a staggering 250,000 children living on the streets without secure shelter/protection. Girls and women are particularly vulnerable to abuse, exploitation and trafficking, and they are voiceless. This project provides access to protection, education, training, and healthcare.

    Situation

Kolkata has a large population of street-connected children. They are the most marginalised and are deprived of their basic rights. Adolescent girls and women are the most vulnerable. They are engaged in domestic work or low-paying unskilled work with poor access to education, healthcare, nutrition, and skill development that hinders them from reaching their full potential. They are subjected to severe inequalities and are exposed to sexual abuse, exploitation, domestic violence and trafficking.

    Solution

HOPE has been providing protection and advocating the rights of vulnerable and marginalised children in India since 1999. We focus on vulnerable girls, who need care and protection – those who have been abused, exploited, neglected or abandoned. This project aims to empower these vulnerable girls by providing access to, protection, education, nutrition, healthcare, and vocational skills training - to ensure holistic development in a safe environment and enable them to reach their full potential.
