In Sudan and South Sudan women/girls suffer significant disadvantages in education and life chances. Illiteracy is high, orphans struggle to get education, disadvantaged students need support to enter higher education. While programmes in Sudan have temporarily halted due to the civil war, we have every intention in again supporting women when that is possible. In S. Sudan, recovery continues, and the needs of women and girls remain high. Girls are in danger of not returning to education.
WEP supports programmes in Sudan and South Sudan. While the current strife in Sudan has interrupted our projects, we plan to restart them in due course. In monitoring the situation closely WEP will implement support as soon as possible. This will include our literacy and higher education work and refurbishing schools damaged by war. In South Sudan we have implemented support to women in a range of higher education courses. The adult literacy scheme continues to grow and requires more teachers.
