Situation
Around the world, human rights defenders face widespread threats and attacks. Almost 400 activists were murdered in 2021. Human rights defenders take on the goliaths of governments, business, organised crime and other vested interests who will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo. This power imbalance is even more acute in the case of women, Indigenous peoples and other historically marginalised groups. Access to resources is particularly limited for rural activists and environmentalists.
Solution
PBI provides international observation and ‘holistic protective accompaniment’ to threatened activists in dangerous contexts. Our ‘unarmed bodyguards’ prevent attacks on environmental and human rights defenders. PBI also empowers brave activists through training in risk management, digital security and wellbeing. And we campaign alongside them for changes in policies and practices that help reduce abuses in the long-term. We keep human rights defenders safe and heard so they can make change.
