This role will refine and roll out free, national school pre-bereavement training, with impact evaluation. The training will meet the recommendations of the UK Commission on Bereavement (UKCB). School parents will be linked to our Family Support Service, so children are prepared for a parent dying.

    Situation

In the UK there are 26,900 children bereaved of a parent each year. That means there is at least one child in every school whose parent has incurable cancer right now. Research confirms there is a lifelong negative impact on children who experience parental bereavement. Schools play a vital role in being a support for children when a parent has incurable cancer, and we want to ensure that the schools have the training they need in pre-bereavement.

    Solution

The post will develop online training and support offers to reach as many schools as possible. The training will ensure schools provide consistency, support systems and a safe place to share and show emotions for the child facing parental bereavement. One example of the training content is to train staff on how to identify feelings that will manifest in specific behaviours, depending on the child’s age, so staff can respond to the feel as well as the behaviour.
