Since 2012, the JMK Trust has delivered a programme of training and development workshops for emerging theatre directors across the country. With resources in arts training stretched, this work is necessary to create opportunity for early-career individuals exploring a career in the arts.

There are increasing barriers to employment for emerging theatre directors. This specific type of training and opportunity is limited outside the London area and often limited beyond those that can afford formal training, able to relocate to the Capital or able to offer unpaid time: options that are simply not available to many young, aspiring directors. There is an increasing skills shortage within the industry; our free programme continues to engage people whom theatre might otherwise lose.

The workshop and networking opportunities are all free, improving accessibility to potential directors regardless of their background, geographical location or financial situation. This work gives participants access to training from experienced creative practitioners and is designed to prevent talented artists from disengaging with the arts. We hold events for directors at venues across the country, creating a sense of community in a profession which can otherwise feel isolating.
