Art Refuge is raising funds to deliver vital arts-based psychosocial support to asylum seekers living in precarious conditions in the UK and northern France who are often isolated, marginalised & struggling with their mental health, particularly during the Winter months.

Situation
Refugees & asylum seekers face unique, complex challenges related to their mental health, with the cold Winter months of particular concern. With increased vulnerability linked to pre-migration experiences such as war trauma, & post-migration conditions such as separation from family, poor housing & difficulties with asylum procedures, asylum seekers are five times more likely to have mental health needs than the general population & yet less likely to receive support (mentalhealth.org.uk).
Solution
We will provide culturally-relevant, arts-based psychological & social support for asylum seekers living in precarious outdoor conditions in northern France and in Home Office contingency accommodation in the UK. We also aim to extend our outreach to more people seeking asylum at additional sites. Our programmes will be delivered by experienced HCPC registered art therapists and artists, including artists with lived experience of displacement, and will use our model The Community Table.
