Lead is poisoning 50% of India’s children, and millions of families are unaware. Lead exposure causes permanent brain damage and cardiovascular death. Situation

Lead is a hazardous pollutant and today, approximately 275 million children are lead-poisoned in India. Indian communities unknowingly have lead sources camouflaging in their lives – hiding in spices, informal battery recycling, and cookware. Victims of lead poisoning can experience brain damage, behavioral difficulties and learning problems. Without education, lead will continue to contaminate and poison the country and prevent children from living to their full potential.

    Solution

Since lead exposure can have irreversible effects on children, it is imperative that we not only identify and eliminate the lead sources, but also educate the affected communities on mitigating future exposure. As Pure Earth has already conducted source analysis projects in several Indian states, it’s time to formally educate the public on how to prevent exposure now and in the future. Pure Earth aims to hold educational community workshops to spread awareness about this widespread health issue.
