Situation
Despite Africa accounting for only 2-3% of global emissions, climate change is disproportionately affecting community health across the continent, especially among vulnerable populations. After three years without consistent rainfall, 22 million people who rely heavily on livestock and agriculture face food insecurity and malnutrition through harvest failure and widespread animal death through water scarcity. This is having catastrophic effects for communities who can't access basic healthcare.
Solution
Amref’s mobile outreaches are delivering vital health services to people and animals in hard-to-reach villages, affected drastically by climate change. Amref uses a One Health Approach which recognises the close connection between the health of these communities, the animals they herd, and their surrounding environment. Integrating health for the whole community, builds their resilience to prepare for and respond to climate shocks and the health challenges they present.
