Suffering the effects of war and persecution, young refugees and asylum-seekers face many obstacles when arriving in the UK. They are unable to work, ineligible for student loans to attend university, and receive a living allowance of just £45 per week. Whilst waiting many months, if not years, for a decision on their asylum claim, language difficulties and a lack of confidence mean many become isolated and disengaged as they struggle to access the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Hope for the Young runs two high-quality programmes that work together holistically to remove the obstacles to young refugees' education and well-being. The Mentoring Programme matches newly-arrived young people with Volunteer Mentors who provide weekly one-to-one support tailored to their needs. The Grants and Advocacy Programme provides small bursaries for tuition fees and study costs alongside a package of emotional and practical support to help young people access and succeed in education.
