1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss or premature birth, devastating families across the UK. Care after loss varies greatly, with some families receiving little to no support. We think this is unacceptable. Together we can stop the heartbreak of baby loss and make pregnancy and birth safe for everyone.

Each year around 3,000 babies are stillborn and 53,000 are premature. 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Black and Asian women are at higher risk of complications and maternal death. Research is needed to stop the heartbreak of baby loss. 71% of families are not given a reason for their miscarriage, stillbirth or preterm birth. For families at risk of losing a baby in the second trimester, there are no specialist guidelines for care. It can depend entirely on who you are or where you live.

Research can save babies’ lives and improve care, but for every £1 spent on maternity care in the NHS, only 1p is spent on pregnancy research. We have the largest pregnancy research network in the UK, and translate breakthroughs into improvements in clinical practice. With specialist care, we can help thousands of families at risk of losing their baby between 14-22 weeks of pregnancy. Our research is being turned into new guidelines and patient information which will improve care and save lives.
