Orphanages harm children. The majority of those who experience life inside an orphanage suffer violence, abuse and neglect. Denied the chance to grow up in a family, they’re more likely to become homeless later in life, to have run-ins with the law, and to experience mental and physical health issues. The shocking truth is that these are almost always children who have, or could have, a family to love and care for them.

Situation
Children need love and security to thrive. We’re recognised leaders in closing orphanages and replacing them with family-based care. We work in 9 countries including Ukraine, South Africa and India. This project will rescue 79 children from orphanages and reunite them with their families.
Solution
We will trace families and explore children safely returning home to their parents or close relatives. We will identify and train foster families. Targeted support to families will be provided to ensure they are stable and able to care for children. Following these steps we will then carefully prepare children and families to be reunited; and we will connect families to local family support services such as income support, day care facilities, advice and counselling. In the following months we will monitor families and provide follow-on support to ensure children thrive.
