Teen mothers in Kenya experience high rates of physical and sexual violence and face an uphill battle in accessing education and employment. With our partner Polycom, we want to support 15 young mothers in the Kibera informal settlement with skills training and wellbeing support so they can thrive.

Teenage pregnancy remains a key issue in Kenya. Recent statistics show that 15% of girls aged 15-19 have already given birth. Poverty, pregnancy complications, and mental health concerns are key issues faced by young mothers. There is a lack of comprehensive sex education in schools and reproductive and maternal health is poorly funded. In certain areas, teen mothers have limited access to education and employment, are discriminated against, and often suffer physical and sexual violence.

Building on previous work between Womankind and Polycom, the project will target an initial 15 young mothers, who will receive vocational skills training, after a skill and interest assessment. They will also attend counselling sessions, financial coaching and take part in a weekly mentorship programme on sexual and reproductive health rights and other life skills. This interactive program is designed to support young mothers holistically so they have the skills and support necessary to thrive.
