Classics for All supports the teaching of classics in state schools across the UK. In response to a widening opportunity gap, we wish to increase our support for state schools in the Midlands and the North, creating fairer access to classics for all pupils, regardless of their background or ability.
Engaging with the literature, languages, and cultures of the ancient world can enrich the lives and raise the aspirations of young people, but too often, access to the study of classics is a geographical lottery. The are far fewer state schools in the Midlands and the North teaching classics. As a result, countless young people are denied opportunities to discover a wide and enriching subject that improves literacy, enhances cultural insight, and drives social mobility.
Classics for All is the only charity to offer free, flexible, and comprehensive support to any state school interested in teaching classics. We train teachers, many with no classics background, to introduce or develop classics on the curriculum, and offer ongoing support, mentoring and advice, through our 14 regional networks. By investing in six target networks in the Midlands and the North, we will increase our support for schools, levelling the playing field for all young people.
