Situation
There is a dire need for free, high-quality children's surgery and surgical training that focuses on long-term sustainable impact. A child in Uganda has an 85% risk of requiring surgical care by age 15, and an estimated 1 million children in Uganda have an unmet surgical need. Furthermore, before our Children's Surgical Hospital opened in 2021, there were only 4 paediatric surgeons in the whole of Uganda and there are only 1.5 doctors and 17 nurses & midwives per 10,000 people in the country.
Solution
EMERGENCY's Children's Surgical Hospital in Entebbe addresses this issue by providing free surgeries, medical treatment and check-ups at an exceptionally high standard, to children in Uganda and from more than 30 countries across Africa and beyond. Furthermore, it provides medical training and employment to local people, with 90% of colleagues in the hospital being Ugandan. This creates a long-term, sustainable impact for decades and reduces dependence on aid.
