Sands aims to make the UK the safest place to have a baby. But we urgently need to answer:why pregnancies end in loss;why babies die; how to save them; how to reduce inequalities; and how to improve maternity safety. Let's be changemakers for future generations, and ensure the safest start in life.

    Situation

In the UK, every year at least 15% of pregnancies end in loss, c.53,000 babies born prematurely face health risks; c.4,800 babies die before, during or shortly after birth; and some families avoid future pregnancies due to traumatic births. 8 in 10 babies who die due to birth complications, could potentially be saved. Half of all maternity units in England provide substandard care. Stillbirth rates are higher for Black/Asian babies, and families in deprived areas face double the risk.

    Solution

Investing in life-saving research tackles vital questions on pregnancy and baby loss. We work with experts to turn new findings into practical guidance and training, improving outcomes for families, and saving more lives. By listening and sharing people’s experiences, we can learn from mistakes and make necessary improvements. We aim for everyone to have access to the safest maternity care. No baby should have a higher risk of dying because of their parent’s postcode, ethnicity, or income.
